This report from Kids Count documents the impact that the COVID-19 pandemic has had on Washington’s families. Using data from the U.S. Census Bureau’s Household Pulse Survey, the authors identified five areas where the pandemic has had particularly devastating effects on Washington children and families, and where low-income and BIPOC families have shouldered a disproportionate burden. These are:
- Job and income losses
- A looming eviction crisis
- Rising food insecurity
- A childcare system on the brink of collapse
- Barriers to online education and COVID-related learning loss
In response to these challenges, the authors recommend that state and federal lawmakers help families by: investing in health, housing, income, and food supports; supporting childcare small businesses, and supporting families in accessing care; and, helping to mitigate learning loss by providing targeted support to students and improving access to technology.
