Mural Apprentice Program

Our Mural Apprentice Programs engage youth in a collaborative process for mural-making that Urban ArtWorks has honed over the past 25 years. They prioritize the youth population in our region most impacted by systemic oppression who face barriers to the arts, employment, and education. 

Youth participants are paid a stipend to work alongside teaching artists to research, design, and install a public mural. The teaching artists and staff nurture a professional, safe, and supportive environment where teens collaborate to shape the mural's vision and content. Through ongoing dialogue and artmaking, they get to know their peers and their community. By providing youth with the opportunity to make a very visible mark on their neighborhoods through the enduring form of a public mural, we hope to foster a permanent sense of belonging and connection.
