Bike Works is dedicated to building sustainable communities by educating youth and promoting bicycling. Bike Works offers our community four programs: experiential youth bicycle riding and repair programs, bicycle recycling and reuse, adult and community engagement programs, and a social enterprise community bike shop. Through time-intensive after-school mentoring programs and innovative bike riding opportunities, Bike Works is deeply committed to racial equity and community engagement specifically in Southeast Seattle which, despite recent gentrification, continues to be one of the most vibrantly diverse areas of Seattle. We work with our community partners to actively recruit youth of color, youth from low-income households, from immigrant and refugee communities, and youth who tend to not be interested in more traditional sports or other after-school programming. As youth explore and enjoy their community by bike, they learn the fundamentals of riding safely and skillfully. They also learn the value and freedom of sustainable, environmentally-friendly transportation. These rides give youth the opportunity to experience the beautiful Pacific Northwest, while they learn how to responsibly and respectfully bike with low impact to the land and our environment.
