Our weekend camping adventure will focus on relationship building and enjoying the outdoors through different activities like basketball, ziplining, rock climbing, volleyball, swimming, 9square, arrow tag, hiking and field games to encourage team building. We will also have some time around bonfires and will coordinate some breakout sessions to empower each participant.
One of the ways to ensure we are effective is to allow the youth to be a part of the planning process in picking the camp site and ensuring that there are activities they would like to do there, and throughout the summer.
Studies show that depression is on the rise for youth and physical activity plays a significant role in preventing and treating it. The reality is, some of the things that depression causes adolescents to experience (e.g. social isolation, lack of self-confidence, inert motivation) are directly addressed in physically active, socially stimulating and cognitively challenging outdoor programs. In the last four years we have seen youth rise up and become youth that contribute to our society. They have gained leadership skills and have become more engaged in their neighborhoods. Our activities are built to be a bridge to social connections and from there the sky is the limit.
