Program Overview
The 2022 Somali Youth Basketball Clinic basketball clinic is a drop-in program where youth engage in physical exercise with peers who share a familiar cultural heritage, while having access to mental health counsellors offering group therapy remotely.
Given that mental health services are culturally stigmatized in East African communities, this athletic sports clinic acts as a catalyst for culturally significant social interactions, and a pipeline to mental health services and social support networks for at-risk East African youth in King and Pierce Counties.

Health & Safety
Masks were required to be worn upon arrival and when leaving the site. Vaccinated youth were able to go without the mask while playing however, a mask was required for unvaccinated youth and staff. Hand sanitizers were offered on site, and hand hygiene was routinely emphasized. An onsite registered nurse was available on site for youth that weren't feeling well. Youth were asked to stay home if they did not feel well and social distancing was practiced amongst staff and youth during break/dinner times. All staff fully vaccinated.

Food Services from Community Partnerships with Somali Restaurants (eg. Juba Restaurant, Kent Halal Mart), Halal Pizza at Dominoes, snacks from Walmart.

This program takes place at the Kent YMCA outdoor and indoor basketball courts. The outdoor basketball court hosted the girls and the indoor court hosted the boys.

Registration paperwork provided upon arrival to the site. Youth are asked to fill out and complete the paperwork the same day they arrive and submit to staff.
