WAPI provide substance use and mental health prevention, early intervention, and treatment services throughout King County. The populations served by WAPI are diverse and a majority are adolescents and young adults who are underprivileged and are people of color. With understanding of the effects of toxic stress, trauma, and the pairs of ACEs: Adverse Childhood Experiences and Adverse Community Environments (Ellis, W., Dietz, W., 2017), WAPI incorporates prevention and intervention strategies as part of our trauma-informed care when serving our youth and young adult populations. We strongly believe that trauma-informed care should start with our agency's general practice, culture, and have staff members represent who we serve.
WAPI has also expanded to serve adults. When it comes to Behavioral Health, we do not want our patients and students to age out of programs because of their birthdate. We want them to grow out of our programs based on their own mental need and capacity.
