Program Overview
Girls Rising is a condensed five-week summer program for incoming 8th grade girls attending school in Seattle. The program consists of group sessions, one-on-one meetings and several field trips. The Girls Rising program meets during the month of July, twice a week, four hours a day.
The goal of the program is to create a space for middle school female-identified youth to:
- Be involved in a community of supportive adults, partners, and peers
- Build a supportive and encouraging community with other girls
- To increase communication skills, including stating needs, listening, and empathy.
- Develop respect for self and others through the exploration of identity, privilege, and oppression
- Develop skills to be able to identify the difference between a healthy and unhealthy relationship and refusal skills
- Develop leadership through social responsibility and activism. - Grow through connections with community activists, resources, and role models
The Girls Rising program offers a $100 gift card incentive for youth that have 80% attendance or better by the end of the program. Bus tokens and food are also provided.
